The chemicals used in growing and manufacturing conventional textiles inflict a terrible toll on our planet and on our health. As global warming accelerates and pollution of our land and waterways becomes increasingly more devastating, chemical sensitivities and allergies become a more common challenge for everyone – especially children.
In recent years, the development of textiles from natural and renewable resources has resulted in a new industry of eco-fabrics – with products that, are far less damaging to people and the environment than conventional cotton and petroleum based synthetics. Eco-fabrics are made from raw materials that are grown and manufactured without the use of pesticides and/or harsh chemicals, and the development of these textiles have minimal ecological damage. Two such fabrics are bamboo and soybean.
Bamboo is grown naturally, needs very little water, no fertilizers, is naturally resistant to pests, and regenerates rapidly (some species grow up to a foot a day). The resulting bamboo fabric has natural anti-bacterial properties and double the absorbency of regular cotton. Little ones with sensitive skin also benefit from bamboo’s hypo-allergenic properties.
Soybean fiber is spun by machine from protein dregs leftover from tofu production. The resulting fiber is soft and silky with a natural pale gold color. Benefits of soybean fiber include natural anti-bacterial qualities as well as UV blocking properties. It is a green alternative to cashmere.
